Digital Transformation and the Internet of Things

On December 3, 2019, Michelle Mindala-Freeman, Former VP Telecom, Media and Technology Practice, Capgemini; Georgia Tech Visiting Scholar at CDAIT; and Chair of the CDAIT IoT Thought Leadership Working Group along with Sebastien Lafon Former VP Global Head of Digital and Marketing services, Boehringer Ingelheim; Georgia Tech Visiting Scholar at CDAIT; and Vice Chair of the CDAIT IoT Standards and Management Working Group, during a breakfast presentation to the business community in the new Coda building at Tech Square on December 3, 2019, introduced the recent CDAIT white paper on "Digital Transformation and the Internet of Things," which was released on November 25, 2019. Critical factors underlying successul undertakings were underlined such as aligned vision; culture; comprehensive approach; clear and inclusive governance; and effective integration of the IoT value chain (holistic view) as highlighted in the CDAIT IoT model (IMAGE).

The Industrial Internet of Things in 2019

CDAIT Managing Director Alain Louchez shared a few observations regarding the lndustrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in 2019 at the fifth annual IoT for Manufacturing  (IoTfM) symposium organized the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute on November 13, 2019. His talk focused on 10 perspectives (without claim to completeness) that were integral to the IIoT space throughout the year: 1) Difficulty to scale up, away from IoT "pilot purgatory"; 2) Security; 3) Privacy; 4) Combination of edge computing, artificial intelligence and blockchain; 5) Emerging 5G; 6) Introduction of IoT-related bills in the U.S. Congress; 7) Continuing absence of a universally-accepted IoT definition (which impedes, for example, the establishment of IoT audit processes); 8) Growing understanding that IoT implementation is much more than a technological undertaking); 9) IIoT solutions are still mostly geared towards cost reduction (minimizing waste) and operational efficiciencies (energy use); and 10) While fraught with non-trivial challenges, the future of manufacturing may reside in developing a "product-as-a-service" framework.

Why it makes business sense to link the Internet of Things and sustainability

Following the CDAIT conference on "The Internet of Things for Sustainability is Smart Business" on July 18, 2019 in Atlanta, ITU News invited CDAIT managing director Alain Louchez to reflect on the event. Among his comments, he submitted that "since IoT technologies are progressively becoming central to the corporate and societal digital transformation currently underway – and sustainability considerations are an indispensable component of this transformation as a result of legal, regulatory, policy and market constraints – there was wide consensus that the connection between IoT and sustainability is bound to grow stronger."

IoT on the Manufacturing Shop Floor: Decoupled Digital Architecture for Manufacturing

At the recent IoT for Manufacturing Workshop, which was held at the Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI) on November 7, 2018, the workshop organizer and director of the Factory Information Systems Center at GTMI, Andrew Dugenske, introduced a powerful framework, i.e., "Decoupled Digital Architecture", to link multiple gateways with various machines through an MQTT broker.
